Sip and Sprint

Gather. Write. Repeat.

A warm + welcoming drop-in group for writers who want a quiet space to create and connect.

2024 Update 🗓️

My workshops are moving to Saturday mornings, so I’m no longer helping Kelsey run our drop-in writer’s group. 😔

If you’re interested in attending the group in 2024, please head over to Kelsey’s workshop page for more details or contact her directly.

✨ There’s magic when we write together.

One Saturday a month, Kelsey Andrews and I host a drop-in writer’s group at the Sidney Library.

Bring your own mug; we’ll provide the tea and hot chocolate. Bring your own pen (or laptop); we’ll provide the writing prompts.

This year, let’s commit to our creative practice—and write together.

🕰 Here’s how it works:

Every drop-in session is 2 hours long. You can bring your own creative project or write to one of our available prompts.

  • 🏁 1 - 1:15 pm: Set an intention for our session.

  • ✍️ 1:15 - 2 pm: Write together in quiet company.

  • ☕️ 2 - 2:15 pm: Break and chat time.

  • ✍️ 2:15 - 2:45 pm: Write together in quiet company.

  • 👋 2:45 - 3 pm: Reflect on the session.

  • 🍻 3:20 onward: Celebrate a successful writing sprint at Small Gods!

🌻 These “writing sprints” are ideal for you if:

  • You have an idea of what you want to write about but have struggled to find time to get words on a page.

  • You feel energized and motivated when writing in the supportive company of others.

  • You want to connect with fellow writers based in Greater Victoria.

  • You don’t need a lot of instruction to start writing. (These are largely self-guided “writing sprints,” though we will offer prompts to get you in the creative spirit.)

  • You don’t need specific feedback on your writing. (If you’d like feedback, we invite you to join one of Monika’s or Kelsey’s workshops.)

🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️ Your group facilitators:

  • I'm Kelsey. I'm mostly a poet but write fiction and a little CNF too. I help writers find and shelter their voices in fun, encouraging, gentle workshops that bring the pleasure back into this thing that we love to do. I'm looking forward to writing with you!

  • Hi there! I’m Monika, a freelance author of 50+ books for schools, and I firmly believe everyone is a writer. Want to get to know me better? I’ve got a mini bio here.

🏡 Where we’ll write:

  • Nell Horth Room at the Sidney Library (10091 Resthaven Drive). The room is to your immediate left, then left again when you enter the first set of doors. If you get turned around, ask a librarian to direct you to the room!

🎒 Please bring with you:

  • A notebook and your favourite pen for writing. Or, if you prefer typing, please bring a digital device (e.g. tablet, laptop).

  • A mug for tea or hot chocolate.

  • Your enthusiasm and creativity!

💸 Cost: Pay what you wish

  • 5️⃣ If you’d like to help with the room rental and tea fees, we suggest a $5 cash contribution to the group—but no pressure.

  • Our mission is for these sessions to be accessible to everyone. So, if you’re going through a difficult financial season, don’t worry about payment; just come by to write with us. We’d love to see you there.
